AB - The purpose of the study was to test new method for in vitro evaluation of dental material wear with 3D digitization procedure. Thirty dental crowns, made of polyetheretherketone and veneered with composite material, were subjected to wear test. The crown surface was digitized using coordinate measuring machine before and after the performed wear test. Mesh 3D models were reconstructed and average and maximum depth of lost material and volume loss was calculated (GOM Inspect 2016 software). Mean average depth value amounted 12 7 gm, maximum depth value was 42 gm, while mean volume loss was 0.0024 mm(3). The smallest measured values were 4 gm for depth value and 0.0003 mm(3) for volume loss. Coefficient of variation was very high for all tested parameters (>50%) as a result of data inconsistency. Within the limitations of applied methodology, the possibility of using coordinate measuring machine in measurement of dental material wear was confirmed.

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and thermoplastic polycarbonate (TPC) materials in order to produce night bruxoguards. For this purpose we used a static tensile test. In the next step the microstructures of PMMA and TPC were observed. Within this framework special attention was paid to the examination of the tensile-test tube fracture surfaces for both materials. This approach revealed that PMMA is a brittle and TPC is a plastic material. Certain mechanical properties and a review of the crucial areas confirmed that the TPC material is extremely favourable for making occlusal splints.

AB - Introduction. Oxidative stress and antioxidants play an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease, including chronic periodontitis (CP). Saliva contains enzymatic (glutathione peroxidase - GPx, superoxide dismutase - SOD, etc.) and non-enzymatic (albumin - ALB, uric acid - UA, glutathione, etc.) antioxidants. Objective. The aims of this study were to investigate: a) level of SOD, GPx, UA, ALB and total antioxidative status (TAS) of saliva in CP patients before and after non-surgical treatment, and b) correlations between clinical periodontal parameters and levels of salivary antioxidants. Methods. Saliva was collected from 21 CP patients before and after non-surgical treatment. The condition of periodontium was assessed by plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, probing depth and clinical attachment loss. Level of investigated antioxidants (except GPx) and TAS was determined using colorimetric method and commercial kits. GPx activity was determined using UV method and commercial kits. Results. After the treatment significant increase of UA, ALB, Gpx, TAS was detected (p lt 0.01) and decrease of SOD activity (p>0.05). A significant correlation was observed between GPx and PI (r=0.575, p=0.008), SOD and GI (r=0.525, p=0.017) before therapy, and SOD and bleeding on probing (BP) (r=0.59, p=0.006), TAS and BP (r=0.453, p=0.045) after therapy. Conclusion. These data suggest that levels of salivary antioxidants generally increase after non-surgical periodontal treatment. Correlation between some clinical periodontal parameters and level of salivary antioxidants was found.
AB - Uvod. Oksidativni stres i antioksidansi igraju važnu ulogu u patogenezi zapaljenjskih oboljenja, uključujući i hroničnu parodontopatiju. Pljuvačka sadrži enzimske antioksidanse, kao što su glutation-peroksidaza (GPx) i superoksid-dismutaza (SOD), i neenzimske antioksidanse, poput albumina (ALB), mokraćne kiseline (UA), glutationa itd. Cilj rada. Stanje parodoncijuma je procenjivano pomoću: plak-indeksa (PI), gingivalnog indeksa (GI), indeksa krvarenja gingive (BP), dubine parodontalnog džepa i nivoa pripojnog epitela. Nivo ispitivanih antioksidansa (osim GPx) i TAS određivan je pomoću kolorimetrijske metode i komercijalnih reagensa. GPx je određivan primenom UV metode i komercijalnih reagensa. Rezultati.

Color matching in prosthodontic therapy is a very important task because it influences the esthetic value of dental restorations. Visual shade matching represents the most frequently applied method in clinical practice. Instrumental measurements provide objective and quantified data in color assessment of natural teeth and restorations. In instrumental shade analysis, the goal is to achieve the smallest ΔE value possible, indicating the most accurate shade match. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of commercially available ceramic shade guides. Methods. VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer (VITA, Germany) was used for instrumental color determination. Utilizing this device, color samples of ten VITA Classical and ten VITA 3D - Master shade guides were analyzed. Each color sample from all shade guides was measured three times and the basic parameters of color quality were examined: ΔL, ΔC, ΔH, ΔE, ΔElc. Based on these parameters spectrophotometer marks the shade matching as good, fair or adjust. Results. After performing 1,248 measurements of ceramic color samples, frequency of evaluations adjust, fair and good were statistically significantly different between VITA Classical and VITA 3D Master shade guides (p = 0.002). There were 27.1% cases scored as adjust, 66.3% as fair and 6.7% as good. In VITA 3D - Master shade guides 30.9% cases were evaluated as adjust, 66.4% as fair and 2.7% cases as good. Conclusion. Color samples from different shade guides, produced by the same manufacturer, show variability in basic color parameters, which once again proves the lack of precision and nonuniformity of the conventional method.
AB - Uvod/Cilj. Određivanje boje zuba u protetskoj terapiji predstavlja veoma važan zadatak jer utiče na prirodan izgled i estetsku vrednost zubnih nadoknada. Vizuelni metod određivanja boje zuba najčešće se koristi u kliničkoj praksi. Instrumentalna merenja pružaju objektivne i kvantifikovane podatke u proceni boje prirodnih zuba i restauracija. Uz pomoć ovog uređaja, analizirani su uzorci boja 10 VITA Classical i 10 VITA 3D - Master ključeva boja. Svaki uzorak boje analiziran je tri puta i ispitivani su osnovni parametri kvaliteta boje: ΔL, ΔC, ΔH, ΔE, ΔElc. Stepen poklapanje boje nadoknade sa ciljnom nijansom spektrofotometar izražava kroz tri ocene kvaliteta: good, fair i adjust. Rezultati. U VITA Classical ključu boja bilo je 27,1% ocene adjust, 66,3% fair i 6,7% ocene good. U VITA 3D - Master ključu boja bilo je 30,9% ocene adjust, 66,4% fair i 2,7% ocene good.

Gingival recession progression in clinical practaice has influenced the development of various surgical procedures and techniques for solving esthetic imperfections and subjective difficulties coused by gingival recession. The aim of this study was to verify efficacy of surgical procedures and to compare both of surgical procedures through the keratinized tissue width. Methods. The study included 20 teeth with gingival recesion, Müller class I and II. Ten teeth with gingival recession were treated with connective tissue autotransplants with periosteum in combination with coronary guided surgical flap (CTG group). On the contralateral side 10 teeth with gingival recession were treated with the same surgical procedures but in combination with platelet-rich plasma (CTGPRP group). We measured the keratinized tissue width. For statistical significance we used the Student's t-test. Results. The study reveled a statistical significance in reducing vertical deepress of recession by both used treatments. Root deepness in CTG and CTG-PRP group was 90% and 93.5%, respectively. With both surgical techniques we achieved larger zone of keratinized gingiva but with a wide zone of keratinized tissue in CTG - the PRP group. Conclusion. The concept regeneration technique with PRP and with the stimulating influence of platele activated growth factors results in the regeneration of deep periodontal tissue as an important prerequisite for the successful treatment of gingival recession.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess and compare the mechanical resistance and the retentive force of metal and composite post systems cemented with different types of cements. Three different designs of prefabricated titanium alloy posts were used in the study, i.e., active, passive and combined, as well as AgPd cast posts and two different fibre-reinforced composite post systems. In accordance with the experimental design these posts were cemented with zinc phosphate, self-curing composite resin or self-adhesive, self-etching, luting agent. Comparing the results between the different metal post designs, cemented with zinc phosphate, a statistically significant difference in the retention was found between all the analysed posts. The best results with the pull-out test were obtained with the active posts, then the passive, followed by the combined posts. The metal cast posts cemented conventionally with Zn-phosphate demonstrated the lowest retentive force value, based on all the measurements. The bond strengths between the post and the root dentine were influenced statistically by the post design (active, passive, combined or cast) and material, metal vs. composite. The active Ti posts showed significantly superior retention in combination with all the cements. The Ti alloy posts achieved higher retentive force values than the composite posts, in general. The composite cements compared to the Zn-phosphate ensure a better retentive strength for all the posts, including individually cast posts.

AB - Background/Aim. Immediate loading is considered to be the most innovative technique in contemporary implant dentistry. Recent clinical and experimental findings have demonstrated that only implants with high primary stability can be subjected to immediate loading protocol with predictable results. It is generally accepted that the most important prerequsite for successful osseointegration is achievement and maintenance of implant stability. The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the possibility for successful application of immediate loading protocol in implant systems with different surface properties. Methods. In the experimental study 2 mongrel dogs were edentulated bilaterally in the mandibular and maxillary premolar areas. After 3 months implants were placed in a pattern 4 different commercially available implants per quadrant (n = 32): Mk III TiUnite (Nobel Biocare, Sweden), ITI TPS (Straumann, Switzerland), 3IOsseotite (Implant Innovation, USA) and XiVE Cell-Plus (Friadent, Germany). Implants were subjected to immediate loading with 4 unit gold cast bridges, 2 days post implantation. The assessment of implant stability and immediate loading possibilities were done by performing Resonance frequency analysis (RFA). Results. After a 6- month loading period all bridges were in function and all implants occurred well osseointegrated. When summarizing the Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) values, it was noted that resonance frequency was significantly higher for mandibular implants. The results of this experimental setting showed that all evaluated surfaces achieved good implant stability. Increase of ISQ values was found for all implants in the mandible and partially decrease of ISQ values for maxillary implants after 6 months of functional loading with 4 unit bridges. Conclusions. Investigated endooseal implants did not show different degree of osseointegration, because there was not statistically significant difference among observed parameters (ISQh i ISQp) between implant systems.
Rezultati.

Fracture toughness determines functional crown strenght and prevents damages on ceramics during mastication. There is a lack of relevant literature data about fracture toughness of crowns made by feather-edge preparation. Mechanical testing of ceramic samples is supposed to show if feather-edge tooth preparation is a successful method for making ceramic crowns without any risk of reduction of their mechanical properties. This research was done to establish effects of feather-edge tooth preparation on fracture toughness of single zirconia ceramic crowns. Methods. The research was performed as an experimental study. Sixty (60) ceramic crowns were made on non-carious extracted human premolars. Thirty (30) crowns were made on the basis of feather-edge preparation (experimental group I). The group II included 30 crowns made on 1 mm rounded shoulder. Crowns fabrication was executed on a copy mill production system 'Zirkonzahn' (Zirkonzahn GMBH, Gais, Germany). The spherical compression test was used to determine fracture toughness, using 6 mm diameter ceramic ball. Fracture load for damaging ceramic crown was recorded on a universal testing machine - Zwick, type 1464, with the speed of 0.05 mm/min. Results. The results of this research introduced significant differences between fracture toughness of ceramic samples in every examined group. However, fracture toughness of crowns from both group was above 2 000 N, what was double beyond a recommended value. The mean value of fracture toughness in the feather-edge group was 2 090 N, and in shoulder group it was 2 214 N. Conclusion. This research showed a high fracture toughness of zirconia crowns made on feather-edge preparation. The examined crowns showed a fracture resistance at a sufficient distance in relation to the minimum values of functional loads. Further research of functional loads of these crown is necessary, as well as research of marginal adaptation of cemented crowns and gingival inflammatory response.

abstract = "Background/Aim. AB - Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate soft tissue development at concave circular macro-grooved titanium abutments in healed sites. Material and methods: In a split-mouth pilot study 10 patients received two implants each at healed posterior sites in contralateral maxillary or mandibular jaw quadrants. Either circular macro-grooved concave study abutments or conventional convex control abutments were immediately provisionalized and received permanent crowns 3 months postimplantation. Marginal bone level, papilla index, modified plaque and bleeding index were recorded. The esthetic outcome was evaluated with standardized perpendicular pictures according to the Pink Esthetic Score (PES). Statistical analysis included the description of all variables by mean value, standard deviation and range. PES values were compared using the Wilcoxon signed rank test for paired data. Results: Cumulative survival rate for all 20 implants was 100%. At the 1-year follow up, there was no statistical significant difference of marginal bone levels between sites restored with the study (-0.11 +/- 0.77 mm) vs. the control (-0.34 +/- 0.53 mm) abutments (P>0.05). Esthetic evaluation (PES) revealed statistically significant differences in scores between the study group [study abutment group] (7.2 +/- 2.82, 8 +/- 1.89) and the control group [control abutment group] (9.5 +/- 1.58, 10.5 +/- 1.72) at the time of prosthetic delivery and the 1-year follow-up. Whereas PES scores for mesial papilla at control sites at the 1-year follow-up demonstrated statistically significant higher values, both soft tissue level and soft tissue contour at control sites revealed statistically significantly higher PES values (P lt 0.05) at time of prosthetic delivery and at 1-year follow-up when compared with study sites. Conclusions: Concave macro-grooved abutments in healed posterior maxillary and mandibular sites did not exhibit a superior soft tissue development compared with standard convex abutments.

AB - Introduction. Modern technologies offer a range of benefits and significantly improve specific therapeutic procedures in dentistry. However, despite gaining experience and training there are still some mistakes in their implementation. The aim of this study was to describe the most common errors during intraoral scanning, 'optical impression' procedure, during CAD-CAM technology for production of dental restorations. Material and Methods. Cerec® 3D CAD-CAM system for one visit tooth reconstruction by inlays, onlays, endocrowns, half and complete crowns and veneers from the ceramic material was used in the study. Results. Analysis included 1564 reconstruction during 5 years. The most common causes of errors performing optical impression were the result of: improper preparation of teeth, the instability of the scanner in the mouth of the patient, incorrect position and angle of the scanner to the object scanning, contrast spray applied in uneven layer, the presence of fluid in the region scan, the presence of artifacts in the region gingival sulcus. Conclusion. Optical impression is faster procedure than conventional impression, but technologically sensitive. The most frequent errors are: improper handling of the scanner, inadequate tooth preparation, irregular powder application on the tooth and irregular use in the gingival sulcus.
AB - Uvod. Savremene tehnologije u stomatologiji imaju niz prednosti i značajno unapređuju pojedine terapijske postupke. Materijal i metode rada.

AB - Objectives: A new method is introduced for the esthetic evaluation of the periimplant mucogingival complex through collection of standardized oral photographs and computer-assisted measurement of reproducible data. Using this method, different soft tissue and crown parameters in the dentogingival complex can be measured and the esthetic outcome monitored. Material and methods: A photographic device for standardized oral photography and a standard protocol for the esthetic evaluation of the crown-mucogingival complex is presented, comprising six soft tissue parameters: (1) mesial and (2) distal papilla areas, (3) mesial and (4) distal papilla heights, (5) soft tissue-crown perimeter, and (6) gingival recession. In order to demonstrate the reproducibility of standardized oral photographs and the accuracy of the measurement of the six parameters, the data obtained in each of two such standardized clinical photographs, taken at 10-14 days intervals, of the anterior maxillary region from 10 patients with no apparent dental disease were compared. For the statistical analysis of the reproducibility of these dependent data the 95% confidence interval and the coefficients of variation were calculated from measurement means and ranges of each of the above parameters, pooled from all 10 patients. Results: Statistical analysis revealed high reproducibility with no significant differences between the range of mean values of all six parameter measurements on the first and second standardized oral photograph of the same patient, respectively. Conclusion: Gingivomorphometry on standardized oral photographs can be considered to be an accurate and reproducible method for the evaluation and measurement of different dentogingival and periimplant parameters.

abstract = "Objectives: A new method is introduced for the esthetic evaluation of the periimplant mucogingival complex through collection of standardized oral photographs and computer-assisted measurement of reproducible data. Conclusion: Gingivomorphometry on standardized oral photographs can be considered to be an accurate and reproducible method for the evaluation and measurement of different dentogingival and periimplant parameters.",

AB - The most important prerequisite for successful osseointegration is achievement and maintenance of implant stability. Recent clinical findings have demonstrated that only implants with high primary stability can be subjected to immediate loading protocol with predictable result. The purpose of this in vivo study was: (1) to determine the changes in implant stability after 6 months of functional loading by using RFA; (2) to evaluate implant stability of 4 implant systems utilizing different techniques for preparing surface roughness; and (3) to compare the results of RFA measurements with histomorphometrical data. 2 mongrel dogs were edentulated bilaterally in the mandibular and maxillary premolar areas. After 3 months, implants were placed in a pattern, 4 different implants per quadrant (n=32): (1) Mk III (RP), TiUnite, Nobel Biocare, Sweden D-3.75, L-10; (2) ITI-Screw, ITI TPS, Straumann, Switzerland D-4.1, L-10; (3) 3I-Osseotite, Implant Innovation, USA D-3.75, L-10; and (4) XiVE, Cell-Plus, Friadent, Germany D-3.4, L-11. Implants were subjected to immediate loading with 4 unit gold cast bridges (3-5days post implantation). Resonance Frequency Analysis - RFA, (Osstelltm, Integration Diagnostics, Sävedalen, Sweden) was used for measurement of implant stability after insertion, as ISQ surgical, and 6 months later, as ISQ prosthetic. Histomorphometrical evaluation - BIC%, the percentage of implant to bone contacts were quantified in the defined zone of interest (total peri-implant area) by computer assisted histomorphometry. In this experimental setting, all evaluated surfaces achieved a good bone-to-implant contact and implant stability. The study demonstrated no statistically significant difference in implant stability and amount of bone-to-implant contact between implant systems utilizing different techniques for preparing surface roughness. Decrease or increase of ISQ values were not always correspondent to histomorphometrical data.

AB - Perfect temporary care guarantees us the complete trust of our patients. From a chemical standpoint Luxatemp or Acrytemp can be classified as bis-acrylic materials. This class of materials has numerous advantages that give us many possibilities for successful clinical use: compatibility with the pulp, lowest setting temperatures, good flexural strength, low shrinkage and high abrasion resistance. The purpose of this paper is to present method of fabrication fixed provisional restorations using a vacuum formed tray matrix with new generation of temporary materials.
