Laser surface modification of metallic implant materials

AB  - Metallic biomaterials are most commonly used as hard-tissue replacements because of their favorable mechanical features and excellent biocompatibility. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of diverse surface modification techniques, with a special emphasis on the laser surface modification method, as well as diverse characterization techniques used for investigating the impact of the surface modification process on metallic implant materials' properties. Moreover, the effect of laser radiation on the surface its and mechanical characteristics, as well as on the structure of metallic bioimplants, is presented. The study of influence of high-intensity laser radiation on metallic materials' surface includes primarily investigations of the surface morphology modifications and specific surface structure formation since their presence enables enhanced osseointegration.
AB  - Metalni biomaterijali se najčešće koriste za izradu implantanata čvrstih strukturnih delova ljudskog tela zbog svojih dobrih mehaničkih karakteristika i odlične biokompatibilnosti. Cilj rada je da se pregledno predstave različite tehnike površinske modifikacije implantantnih materijala sa posebnim osvrtom na metodu laserske modifikacije površine, kao i mnogobrojne karakterizacione metode za ispitivanje uticaja procesa površinske modifikacije na svojstva metalnih implantantnih materijala. Osim toga, predstavljen je i razmatran uticaj laserskog zračenja na površinske i mehaničke karakteristike, kao i na strukturu metalnih bioimplantanata. Ispitivanje uticaja laserskog zračenja visokog intenziteta na površinu metalnih materijala prvenstveno obuhvata ispitivanje morfoloških površinskih promena i formiranja specifičnih površinskih struktura, koje doprinose poboljšanju oseointegracije metalnih implantanata.

Recasting as a booster of Ag-Pd alloy cytotoxicity: induction of cell senescence prior to mass cell death

AB  - The biological quality and chemical composition of alloys used in dental practice change during heat treatment. Often the residues of the previous cast are not disposed of but are reused and recycled until consumed. Thus, manufactured dental restorations have modified biological quality and chemical composition, and compromised biocompatibility. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of repeated casting on the cytotoxicity of the silver-palladium (Ag-Pd) alloy. Our results showed that repeated casting of the Ag-Pd dental alloy affected its biocompatibility by promoting toxicity against transformed fibroblasts in a contact-independent manner. A strong decrease in cell proliferation, induction of senescence and massive cell death were observed in cultures exposed only to a medium previously incubated with dental alloy samples. The obtained data indicated that toxicity mediated by the accumulation of the Ag, Pd, Cu and Zn cations released from the Ag-Pd material was enhanced by recasting. The induction of cell senescence and subsequent apoptotic and necrotic death were accompanied by amplified intracellular production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, suggesting their involvement in the cell destruction process. Therefore, compromised biocompatibility after recasting with the Ag-Pd alloy can be the cause of serious local cell destruction, as observed in clinical practice.

AB  - Background/Aim. Obesity is an established risk factor for numerous chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of well-balanced different caloric restriction (CR) diets on anthropometric parameters and standard biochemical cardiovascular risk markers [lipid profile, glucose homeostasis and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)] in overweight/obese females. Methods. Participants (age 20-40 years) were randomized into 3 different CR diet groups: the group I - restriction of 20% calories from baseline energy requirements, the group II - restriction of 50% calories from baseline energy requirements and the group III - alternating daily diets with 70%/30% restriction. The study lasted 42 weeks. Anthropometric parameters were measured at the start and after 4, 8, 20 and 42 weeks after dietary intervention beginning. Biochemical markers were determined at baseline and after 20 and 42 weeks from dietary restriction start. Results. Body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body fat (in %), in the different CR diet groups significantly decreased after 42 weeks. Body weight was less 11 kg in the group I and 12 kg in the groups II and III. WC was reduced by 11 cm in the groups I and III and by 10 cm in the group II. Different CR diets had the same effects on body fat (a reduction of 15% of body fat). Total cholesterol decreased by 7% in the group I and by 8% in the group III. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol decreased by 14% in the group I and by 13% in group III. There were no significant changes in total and LDL-cholesterol levels in the group II. The atherogenic index presented as trigliceride/high density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio decreased by 0.22 in the group I, by 0.25 in the group II and by 0.32 in the group III. Various CR diets had the same effects on reducing the hs-CRP levels. Conclusion. Different CR diets with the same macronutrient content are equally effective in reducing body weight, WC and body fat, improve cardiometabolic risk factors and decrease level of proinflammatory hs-CRP in overweight/obese females.
AB  - Uvod/Cilj. Gojaznost je faktor rizika od nastanka mnogih hroničnih bolesti. Cilj istraživanja bio je da se ispita efekat dobro izbalansirane ishrane različitih kalorijskih ograničenja na antropometrijske parametare i standardne biohemijske kardiovaskularne markere rizika [(lipidni profil, homeostazu glukoze, visoko senzitivni C-reaktivni protein - high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)] kod predgojaznih/gojaznih žena. Metode. Ukupno 97 žena, između 20 i 40 godina starosti, konzumirale su uravnotežene, kalorijski različite restriktivne dijete, na sledeći način: I grupa (n = 37) - ograničenje 20% kalorija od osnovnih energetskih potreba; II grupa (n = 30) - ograničenje od 50% kalorija od osnovnih energetskih potreba i III grupa (n = 30) - naizmenična dnevna restrikcija od 70% i 30% kalorija od osnovnih energetskih potreba. Stepen uhranjenosti je određivan antropometrijskim merenjima na početku i nakon 4, 8, 20 i 42 nedelje od uvođenja dijeta. Biohemijski markeri analizirani su na početku i nakon 4, 8, 20 i 42 nedelje. Rezultati. Kalorijski različite restriktivne dijete dovele su do značajnog smanjena telesne mase, indeksa telesne mase (body mass index - BMI), obima struka (OS) i % telesne masti nakon tretmana od 42 nedelje. Telesna masa snižena je za 11 kg u grupi I, a za 12 kg u grupama II i III. Za 11 cm je smanjen OS u grupama I i III i za 10 cm u grupi II. Gubitak 15% ukupne telesne masti ostvaren je za sve vrste dijeta nezavisno od različitog kalorijskog unosa. Koncentracija ukupnog i (low density lipoprotein) holesterola (LDL-holesterola) snižena je za 7% i 14% u grupi I i za 8% i 13% u grupi III. Dijeta sa redukcijom kalorijskog unosa od 50% nije imala efekta na nivo ukupnog i lipoprotein niske gustine LDL-holesterola. Aterogeni indeks predstavljen kao odnos trigliceridi/lipoprotein visoke gustine (high density lipoprotein) - TG/HDL bio je manji za 0,22 u grupi I, za 0,25 u grupi II i za 0,32 u grupi III. Kalorijski različite restriktivne dijete dovele su do istog sniženja nivoa hs-CRP. Zaključak. Restriktivne vrste dijeta sa različitim kalorijskim unosom i sa istim procentom zastupljenosti makronutrijenata jednako su efikasne u smanjenju telesne mase, OS i % telesne masti, dovode do poboljšanja faktora kardiometaboličkog rizika i smanjenja proinflamatornog hs-CRP kod predgojaznih/gojaznih žena.

The relationship between adiposity parameters and C-reactive protein values in overweight and obese women

AB  - Background/Aim. Overweight/obesity has become important health problem in developed countries. It may be related to a presence of low-grade inflammation in white adipose tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and its relation to anthropometric parameters in overweight and obese females. Methods. This study included 200 apparently healthy, overweight and obese women (18-45 years). Their standard and alternative anthropometric parameters [body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat (%F), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body adiposity index (BAI)] were determined and correlated to serum CRP concentration. Results. Average CRP level was 5.56 ± 2.43 mg/L, and it significantly positively correlated to all investigated anthropometric parameters. There was significant difference between overweight and obese group in all investigated anthropometric parameters, as well as in CRP values. When investigated separately, according to BMI, values regarding obese females showed significant correlation between CRP and every investigated anthropometric parameter. In overweight subjects, no such correlation was recorded. In the obese group, all investigated parameters were significantly related to F. In overweight subjects, body weight (BW), BMI, WC and WHtR showed significant relation to F. Conclusion. The significant difference between the overweight and obese group in all parameters of central obesity was found as well as in the CRP levels. In the obese group, we found strong correlation between adiposity measured by fat percentage and parameters of central obesity, while in the overweight group WHR and BAI did not correlate to fat percentage. Our results confirmed that CRP is a valuable marker of metabolic risk in obese females, and BMI, although not so new, is still reliable parameter of adiposity.

Prekomerna telesna masa i gojaznost postali su značajan zdravstveni problem u razvijenim zemljama, a mogu biti povezani sa prisustvom hronične inflamacije niskog intenziteta u belom masnom tkivu. Cilj rada bio je da se ispitaju nivoi markera inflamacije, C-reaktivnog proteina (CRP), i njegova povezanost sa standardnim antropometrijskim parametrima kod predgojaznih i gojaznih žena. Metode. Studijom je bilo obuhvaćeno 200 zdravih žena (18-45 god) kojima su određeni standardni i alternativni antropometrijski parametari [indeks telesne mase (BMI), procenat masti (%F), obim struka (WC), odnos obima struka i kukova (WHR), odnos obima struka i visine (WHtR), kao i indeks telesne masnoće (BAI)] koji su zatim korelisani sa koncentracijama CRP u serumu. Rezultati. Prosečna vrednost nivoa CRP u serumu u celoj grupi iznosila je 5,56 ± 2,43 mg/L i utvrđena je njegova značajna pozitivna korelacija sa svim ispitivanim antropometrijskim parametrima. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP) and its relation to anthropometric parameters in overweight and obese females. Methods. This study included 200 apparently healthy, overweight and obese women (18-45 years). Prosthetic treatment after teeth extractions in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

AB  - Introduction Good and well balanced diet provided by adequate mastication is part of therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The critical period presents the time immediately after teeth extractions; hence, immediate denture is a rational therapeutical choice for diabetic patients. The presence of immediate denture and its compression might compromise wound healing process, affect chewing ability, food intake and consequently blood glucose level in type 2 DM patients. Objective The objective of this study was to compare socket opening diameters (SOD), chewing ability, changes in blood glucose level and food intake in type 2 DM patients with and without maxillary immediate complete denture (MICD) during a three-week wound healing period. Methods The study comprised 78 type 2 DM partially removable denture wearers (42 candidates for teeth extractions and 36 candidates for teeth extractions and insertion of MICDs). During the three-week period participants were followed for SOD, chewing ability and changes in blood glucose level and food intake. Results Patients with MICD showed significantly lower reduction of SOD (seventh, 14th, 21st day) and higher chewing ability (seventh, 14th, 21st day) in comparison to patients without an MICD. Significantly lower number of patients with an MICD had changes in blood glucose level and food intake. Conclusion Maxillary immediate complete denture presents a good therapeutic choice for type 2 DM patients, as it provides possibility of adequate mastication after teeth extractions and maintenance of nutritional status and blood glucose level.
AB  - Uvod Redovna i balansirana ishrana obezbeđena adekvatnom mastikacijom je značajan deo terapije pacijenata sa dijabetesom melitusom tipa 2 (DM tip 2). Kritičan period za ove bolesnike jeste vreme neposredno nakon ekstrakcije zuba, pa za njih imedijatna proteza predstavlja terapijski izbor. Prisustvo imedijatne proteze i kompresija koju izaziva mogu kompromitovati proces zarastanja, uticati na sposobnost žvakanja, količinu unete hrane, a time i nivo glikemije kod pacijenata obolelih od ovog tipa dijabetesa. Cilj rada Cilj istraživanja je poređenje dijametra ekstrakcionih alveola (DEA), sposobnosti žvakanja, promene količine unete hrane i glikemije kod DM tipa 2 pacijenata sa gornjom totalnom imedijatnom protezom (GTIP) i bez nje. Metode rada Istraživanje je obuhvatilo 78 DM tipa 2 pacijenata, nosilaca parcijalnih pločastih proteza (42 pacijenta indikovana za ekstrakcije zuba i 36 pacijenata indikovanih za ekstrakcije zuba i dobijanje GTIP). Tokom postekstrakcionog perioda od tri nedelje kod pacijenata su praćeni DEA, sposobnost žvakanja, promena količine unete hrane i glikemije. Rezultati Pacijenti sa GTIP pokazali su značajno manju redukciju DEA (7, 14, 21. dana), veću sposobnost žvakanja (7, 14, 21. dana) u odnosu na pacijente bez GTIP. Značajno manji broj pacijenata sa GTIP imao je promene u glikemiji i unošenju hrane u odnosu na grupu bez GTIP. Zaključak Imedijatna proteza predstavlja terapijski izbor kod pacijenata sa DM tipa 2, budući da omogućava dobru mastikaciju nakon ekstrakcija, uz održanje nutricionog statusa i glikemije.

The effect of recasting on biological properties of Ni-Cr dental alloy

AB  - Introduction Increases in market prices of gold over the last 20 years have led to expansion of basic dental alloys, which, primarily due to their good mechanical properties and acceptable prices, have found their place in everyday dental practice. However, within the procedure of making dental prosthetic restorations, the alloys are melted and cast, which leads to changes in their physical, mechanical and biological properties. Objective The objective of the study was to test biocompatibility of a Ni-Cr dental alloy (WIRON 99) depending on the number of melting and casting processes. Methods The working method included the testing of cytotoxicity of the alloy obtained by casting after one, after four, and after eight successive processes of melting. Cytotoxicity of samples was tested by means of a 24-hour and a three-day cytotoxicity test, done on L929 fibroblasts. Results A repeatedly melted and cast alloy shows a reduced biocompatibility and causes specific responses of the tissues in the surrounding area. Since the cytotoxic effect is more significant in the extended contact with the culture cells, a three-day cytotoxicity test showed discrete changes which were the indicator of cell growth inhibition in the cell culture. Conclusion The obtained results confirm the working hypothesis that repeated alloy melting and casting will decrease biocompatibility of dental alloys and will lead to specific responses of the tissue in the surrounding area.
AB  - Uvod Porast cene zlata na svetskom tržištu u poslednjih 20 godina doveo je do ekspanzije baznih dentalnih legura, koje su pre svega zbog dobrih mehaničkih svojstava i pristupačnih cena našle primenu u svakodnevnoj stomatološkoj praksi. U proceduri izrade protetskih radova legure se tope i izlivaju, što dovodi do promena njihovih fizičko-mehaničkih i bioloških svojstava. Cilj rada Cilj rada bio je ispitivanje biokompatibilnosti jedne Ni-Cr legure (WIRON 99) u zavisnosti od broja topljenja i livenja. Metode rada U radu je ispitivana citotoksičnost legure dobijene izlivanjem posle jednog topljenja, posle četiri i posle osam uzastopnih topljenja. Citotoksičnost uzoraka je ispitivana pomoću 24-časovnog i trodnevnog testa citotoksičnosti na L929 fibroblastima. Rezultati Više puta topljena i livena legura pokazala je smanjenu biokompatibilnost, dovodeći do specifičnih odgovora tkiva u neposrednom okruženju. Budući da je citotoksični efekat izraženiji u produženom kontaktu sa ćelijama iz kulture, trodnevni test citotoksičnosti je pokazao diskretne promene koje su pokazatelj inhibicije rasta ćelija u kulturi. Zaključak Dobijeni rezultati potvrđuju radnu hipotezu da više puta ponavljana topljenja i li venja legura smanjuju biokompatibilnost dentalnih legura i dovode do specifičnih odgovora tkiva u neposrednom okruženju.

Some consequences of repeated casting of Co-Cr dental alloy

AB  - The effect of multiple recasting of commercial Co-Cr base dental alloy (Dentalite-C) on its structural characteristics and ion release rates in artificial saliva has been investigated. The number of recasting was once, four and eight times. The as-cast microstructure became uniformer as the number of recasting was increased whereby macro-and micro-hardness and electrical conductivity of the castings decreased. Metallic ion release in artificial saliva was monitored in vitro over the period of 22 weeks at the temperature of 37 degrees C and pH 2.3. Only Co and Fe were evidenced in artificial saliva and their release rates are measured. The ion release rates increases with time. The ion release rate of Fe was larger than Co. The ion release rates increases substantially by increasing the number of recasting.

AB  - Noble dental alloys are often reused in dental practice by recasting. The aim of this study was to determine if repeated casting of high gold dental alloys has a detrimental effect on alloy microstructure, type of porosity, structure and microhardness. Results showed that recasting procedure had a strong effect on the change of alloy porosity type. It was also found that alloy microhardness increased with the increase of the number of recasting cycles. At the same time the grain growth and changes of the solid solution phases in the microstructure were observed.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy in reduction of orofacial pain

AB  - Introduction Patients with craniomandibular disorders suffer from hypertonic, fatigued and painful masticatory muscles. This condition can lead to limitation of mandibular jaw movements. All of these symptoms and signs are included in myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used for treatment of these patients. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the effect of TENS therapy on chronic pain reduction in patients with the muscular dysfunction symptom. Methods In order to evaluate the effect of TENS therapy before and after the treatment, Craniomandibular Index (Helkimo) was used. Pain intensity was measured by VAS. Patients had TENS treatment over two-week period. BURST TENS modality was used. Current intensity was individually adjusted. Results Two patients did not respond to TENS therapy. Complete pain reduction was recorded in 8 patients, while pain reduction was not significantly different after TENS therapy in 10 patients. Conclusion TENS therapy was confirmed as therapeutic procedure in orofacial muscle relaxation and pain reduction.
AB  - Uvod Hiperaktivnost mastikatorne muskulature, pojačan tonus mišića, zamor i bol, uz smanjenje opsega funkcijskih kretnji donje vilice, jesu znaci i simptomi miofascijalnog bolnog disfunkcijskog sindroma. Različiti terapijski modaliteti koriste se u lečenju, među kojima je i terapija transkutanom električnom nervnom stimulacijom (TENS). Cilj rada Cilj rada bila je klinička potvrda efekta terapije TENS na intenzitet hroničnog bola kod osoba sa simptomima disfunkcije mišića. Metode rada Radi procene terapije TENS korišćen je Helkimov kraniomandibularni indeks. Za kvantifikaciju intenziteta bola pre i posle lečenja primenjena je vizuelno-analogna skala (VAS). Pacijenti su podvrgnuti terapiji tri puta nedeljno u trajanju od 40 minuta tokom dve nedelje. Primenjen je modalitet burst (kratki impulsi dužine 10 ms i frekvencije 2-3 Hz) uz individualno podešavanje intenziteta strujnog impulsa. Rezultati Nisu primećeni negativni sporedni efekti terapije TENS. Potpuno smanjenje intenziteta bola zabeleženo je kod osam ispitanika. Kod 10 ispitanika smanjenje bola nije bilo značajno. Dva pacijenta nisu reagovala na primenjenu terapiju. Zaključak Terapija TENS se preporučuje osobama s manjim stepenom kraniomandibularnih disfunkcija bez obzira na intenzitet bola.

Influence of recasting on biological and microstructural properties of dental alloys

AB  - Microstructure is the basic factor that determines the properties of any material. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of recasting of two commercially available dental alloys, Ni-Cr (Wiron 99) and Co-Cr (Dentalit C), on physiology of cells, as well as comparation those two dental alloys, one containing Ni and the other not. In this study the it was presumed that many times recasted dental alloy has changed microstructure, which influences the physical and mechanical properties and biological quality of the alloy. The specimens of both tested alloys were casted after the first, fourth and eight melting, without adding any amount of new alloy. The microstructural characterization by optical microscopy showed typical dendritic structure of Co-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys after different numbers of recasting. It is well known that the dendritic structure shows differences in chemical composition and that the dendrite branches contain less alloying and trace elements than the interdendritic zone. There were noticed some microstructural changes that were much more obvious by Co-Cr dental alloy. SEM analysis has given more explicit informations about the structure of the examined dental alloys. Based on the binary phase diagram, Ni-Cr alloy shows a wide region of solubillity in solid condition Cr in Ni. In a complex system, as it is in Wiron 99, beside the solid solution of Ni rich phase, there are also phases in the interdendritic zones with irregular shapes, depending of the number of recasting. EDS analysis showed the differences in chemical composition of dendritic and the interdendritic zones, that were very small for Wiron 99. For the Co-Cr alloy it was possible to detect the differences in chemical compositions between two zones, dentritic and interdendritic. As the number of recasting was increased, the structure became more homogenous and the difference in the chemical composition was decreased for Co and Mo, while the rest of the traceing elements Cr, Fe and Si were homogenous in the analyzed zones. X-ray analysis of the specimens of the Ni-Cr dental alloy indicate that there were only reflections of face centered cubic crystal lattice of solid solution of α-Ni phase. It was established that the increase of the number of recasting changes the relative intensity of diffraction maximum. Also, there were changes in the preferred orientation of the crystallites with the increase of the number of recasting...
AB  - Mikrostruktura je osnovni faktor koji određuje svojstva nekog materijala. Cilj ove studije je procena mikrostrukturnih promena nakon višestrukog pretapanja dve komercijalne dentalne legure, Ni-Cr (Wiron 99) i Co-Cr (Dentalit C) i njihov uticaj na fiziološke procese ćelija, kao i komparacija kvaliteta dve ispitivane legure, od kojih jedna sadrži, a druga ne sadrži Ni. U ovom istraživanju pošlo se od pretpostavke da više puta topljenja i livenja dentalna legura ima promenjenu mikrostrukturu, koja utiče na izmenu fizičko-mehaničkih svojstava i biološkog kvaliteta legura. Uzorci obe ispitivane legure izliveni su nakon prvog, četvrtog i osmog topljenja, bez dodavanja nove legure. U cilju mikrostrukturne karakterizacije optičkom mikroskopijom uočena je tipična dendritna struktura uzoraka Co-Cr, kao i Ni-Cr dentalne legure, nakon različitog broja topljenja i livenja. Poznato je da dendritna struktura pokazuje razliku u hemijskom sastavu i da dendritne grane sadrže manje legirajućih i pratećih elemenata nego međudendritni prostor. Uočene su promene u mikrostrukturi koje su znatno izražejnije kod Co-Cr dentalne legure. SEM analiza je dala jasnije podatke o strukturi ispitivanih uzoraka dentalnih legura. Poznato je na osnovu binarnog dijagrama stanja da Ni-Cr sistem pokazuje široku oblast rastvorljivosti u čvrstom stanju Cr u Ni. U složenom sistemu kao što je Wiron 99 pored čvrstog rastvora bogatog Ni uočavaju se i faze u međudendritnom prostoru nepravilnog oblika, koje menjaju svoj raspored u zavisnosti od broja ponavljanih topljenja i livenja. EDS analizom utvrđeno je da se razlika u hemijskom sastavu dendrita i međudendritnog prostora veoma mala za leguru Wiron 99. Kada je u pitanju legura na bazi Co-Cr, bilo je moguće praćenje razlike u hemijskom sastavu između dve zone, dendrit-međudendritni prostor. Sa povećanjem broja ponovljenog topljenja i livenja uočeno je da dolazi do homogenizacije strukture, odnosno do smanjenja razlike u hemijskom sastavu i da je to najuočljivije za elemente Co i Mo, dok ostali praćeni elemente Cr, Fe i Si imaju ravnomernu (homegenu) raspodelu u analiziranim zonama. Rendgenostrukturnom analizom uzoraka Ni-Cr dentalne legure uočene su samo refleksije površinski centrirane kubne kristalne rešetke čvrstog rastvora α-Ni. Utvrđeno je da sa povećanjem broja topljenja i livenja legure, menjaju relativni intenziteti difrakcionih maksimuma. Takođe se menja i preferentna orjentacija kristalita sa povećanjem broja ponovljenog topljenja i livenja...

Sa povećanjem broja ponovljenog topljenja i livenja uočeno je da dolazi do homogenizacije strukture, odnosno do smanjenja razlike u hemijskom sastavu i da je to najuočljivije za elemente Co i Mo, dok ostali praćeni elemente Cr, Fe i Si imaju ravnomernu (homegenu) raspodelu u analiziranim zonama. Rendgenostrukturnom analizom uzoraka Ni-Cr dentalne legure uočene su samo refleksije površinski centrirane kubne kristalne rešetke čvrstog rastvora α-Ni. Utvrđeno je da sa povećanjem broja topljenja i livenja legure, menjaju relativni intenziteti difrakcionih maksimuma. AB  - The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of recasting of commercially available Ni-Cr (Wiron 99) and Co-Cr (Dentalit C) dental alloys on physiology of microenvironmental cells. Recasting of Ni-Cr alloy intensified its cytotoxicity manifested through enhanced free radicals production, induction of cell death and permamently diminished cell proliferation. On the other hand, after initial toxic effect cells adapted to the presence of Co-Cr alloys. Independently of recasting, Co-Cr alloys are more compatible with microenvironment then Ni-Cr alloy. Oppositely, recasting of Ni-Cr alloy promoted its toxicity.

Comparative analysis of unilateral removable partial denture and classical removable partial denture by using finite element method

AB  - Introduction. Various mobile devices are used in the therapy of unilateral free-end saddle. Unilateral dentures with precise connectivity elements are not used frequently. In this paper the problem of applying and functionality of unilateral freeend saddle denture without major connector was taken into consideration. Objective. The aim was to analyze and compare a unilateral RPD (removable partial denture) and a classical RPD by calculating and analyzing stresses under different loads. Methods. 3D models of unilateral removable partial denture and classical removable partial denture with casted clasps were made by using computer program CATIA V5 (abutment teeth, canine and first premolar, with crowns and abutment tissues were also made). The models were built in full-scale. Stress analyses for both models were performed by applying a force of 300 N on the second premolar, a force of 500 N on the first molar and a force of 700 N on the second molar. Results. The Fault Model Extractor (FME) analysis and calculation showed the complete behavior of unilateral removable partial denture and abutments (canine and first premolar), as well as the behavior of RPD under identical loading conditions. Applied forces with extreme values caused high stress levels on both models and their abutments within physiological limits. Conclusion. Having analyzed stresses under same conditions, we concluded that the unilateral RPD and classical RPD have similar physiological values.
AB  - Uvod. U lečenju jednostrane krezubosti koriste se različiti oblici mobilnih nadoknada. Jednostrane kompleksne proteze sa preciznim veznim elementima nisu često u upotrebi. Radi rasvetljenja problema jednostrano slobodnog sedla i primene proteze koja ne poseduje veliku spojnicu, u ovom radu je prikazano istraživanje funkcionalnosti ove manje poznate nadoknade. Cilj rada. Cilj rada je bio da se ispitaju i uporede dobijeni naponi jednostrane kompleksne i konvencionalne parcijalne skeletirane proteze pod opterećenjem. Metode rada. U kompjuterskom programu CATIA V5 napravljeni su trodimenzionalni modeli jednostrane kompleksne proteze s odgovarajućim potpornim strukturama (retencioni zubi - očnjak i prvi premolar s namenskim krunicama, alveole i parodontalni prostor) i klasične skeletirane proteze s livenim kukicama. Radi validnosti dobijenih rezultata, modeliranje je obavljeno u prirodnoj veličini. Primenom metode konačnih elemenata izvršena je komparativna analiza vrednosti dobijenih napona pri opterećenju silama od 300 N u predelu drugog premolara, 500 N u predelu prvog molara i 700 N u predelu drugog molara. Rezultati. Proračun je dao sliku ponašanja celog modela jednostrane kompleksne parcijalne proteze s retencionim zubima i sliku celog modela klasične skeletirane parcijalne proteze koje su predstavljene u obliku napona pri različitim uslovima opterećenja. Uneta opterećenja izazvala su visok nivo napona na modelu i zubima nosačima, ali u granicama fiziološke podnošljivosti. Zaključak. Naponi na potpornim strukturama jednostrane kompleksne proteze koji su nastali usled dejstva primenjenih sila bili su u podnošljivim fiziološkim granicama. U uslovima istog opterećenja primenom metode konačnih elemenata dobijaju se veoma slične vrednosti napona jednostrane kompleksne proteze i konvencionalne skeletirane proteze.

The effect of repeated casting on the biocompatibility of a dental gold alloy

AB  - Although highly noble Au alloys have been considered as biocompatible dental materials, little is known about whether recasting affects their biocompatibility. The aim of this work was to study the effect of repeated casting procedures on the microstructure and biocompatibilty of a noble Au dental alloy. The prepared samples of one- four- and eight times melted/cast Dentor S were used to study primary cutaneous irritation and sensibilization on experimental animals. The extract of the alloy prepared by conditioning the Dentor S samples in a cell culture medium was used to study the cytotoxicity on L929 cells. The elemental composition and surface changes of the alloy were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and optical microscopy, respectively. Our results showed that repeated casting decreased the biocompatibility of Dentor S, manifested as decreased metabolic and proliferative activities of L929 cells and that the effect correlated with the number of melting/casting procedures. However, neither sample of Dentor S caused irritation and sensibilization on experimental animals. EDX showed that recasting slightly increased the content of Au and Cu and slightly decreased the content of Pt, Pd and Zn. These changes correlated with the observations by optical microscopy. In conclusion, our results show that repeated casting of noble Au alloy changes its microstructure and decreases the biocompatibilty, suggesting that this procedure should be avoided in dental practice.
AB  - Visoko plemenite legure su biokompatibilni materijali, ali je malo poznato da li ponovljena livenja legura utiču na njihovu biokompatibilnost. Cilj ovog rada je bio da se utvrdi efekat ponovljenog topljenja i livenja na mikrostrukturu i biokompatibilnost visoko plemenitih dentalnih legura zlata. Pripremjena je serija uzoraka od jednom, četiri i osam puta topljene i livene Dentor S legure za ispitivanje primarne iritacije kože i senzibilizacije na eksperimentalnim životinjama, kao i in vitro ispitivanje citotoksičnosti na L929 ćelijama. Hemijski sastav i promena površine legure ispitivana je EDX analizom i optičkim mikroskopom. Naši rezultati su ukazali da ponavljana livenja smanjuju biokompatibilnost Dentor S legure, koja se manifestuje smanjenjem metabolitičke i proliferativne aktivnosti L929 ćelija i da je efekat u korelaciji s brojem topljenja i livenja. Ni jedan uzorak Dentor S legure ne uzrokuje iritaciju i senzibilizaciju eksperimentalnih životinja.
