AB - Background/Aim. The deposition of hydroxyapatite (HAP) on the surface of titanium (Ti) alloys enhances bioactivity and osseointegration of the alloys which are widely used as implant materials in dentistry and orthopaedic surgery. However, the stability of HAP and subsequent biocompatibility of such alloys depends on the coating technique. The aim of this work was to test the cytotoxicity of a Ti alloy (Ti6Al4V), coated with HAP by a new plasma deposition method. Methods. The Ti6Al4V samples prepared as discs, 10 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness, were coated with HAP (one or both sides of the alloy) by an innovative atmospheric plasma jet method. The cytotoxicity of uncoated and HAP coated Ti6Al4V samples was evaluated by examining the morphological changes and viability of L929 fibroblasts in direct contact with the test materials. Adequate negative (polystyrene) and positive (nickel) control discs of the same size were used. The indirect cytotoxicity was determined by cultivating L929 cells with conditioning medium (CM), prepared as extract of the test samples incubated in the complete Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 medium for cell cultures. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated based on the degree of metabolic activity, necrosis, apoptosis and proliferation of L929 cells, using the appropriate assays. Results. Uncoated and one side HAP coated Ti6Al4V alloys were classified as non-cytotoxic according to the current ISO 10993-5 criteria, whereas two sides HAP coated Ti6Al4V alloy samples were slightly-moderate cytotoxic. The cytotoxicity manifested as the inhibition of metabolic activity and proliferation of L929 cells as well as the induction of their apoptosis and necrosis was significantly reduced by conditioning of HAP/Ti6Al4V alloys for 24 hours. The cytotoxic effect of HAP/Ti6Al4V CM only partly decreased in the presence of nifelate, a calcium (Ca) channel blocker, suggesting that Ca ions were not the only responsible cytotoxic agent. Conclusion. The original HAP coating procedure by atmospheric plasma spraying with high energy input enables the production of the stable adhesive coatings on Ti6Al4V alloys. Their cytotoxicity, which depends on the quantity of HAP coating layer, could be significantly reduced up to the non-cytotoxic level by prior conditioning of the alloys in culture medium. Such a procedure, which removes leachable toxic components, could be useful before implantation of HAP coated alloys in vivo.

AB - Introduction/Objective the objective of this paper is to describe the microstructure and mechanical properties of sintered Co-Cr alloy and to emphasize its advantages and disadvantages with respect to the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Co-Cr alloy. Methods Base Co-Cr alloy, EOSint M EOS Co-Cr SP2 (EOS GmbH, Munch, Germany), was used for the purpose of this research as the base material for sintering metal structures of metal-ceramic restorations. Metal sintering was conducted by using EOSint M 280 device of German origin in a stream of neutral gas - argon. After that, the alloy was heated over a period of 20 minutes at the temperature of 800°C. The chemical composition of the alloy was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. Microstructure of the tested alloy samples was examined under an optical metallographic and scanning electron microscope. Physical and mechanical properties were measured in a universal testing machine. The samples were prepared according to the standard ISO 527-1:1993. Results Chemical composition of the sintered Co-Cr alloy, determined by applying energy dispersive spectroscopy, indicated the same qualitative but different quantitative composition compared to cast Co-Cr alloys. The microstructure of the sintered Co-Cr alloy is lamellar in nature, with two dominant phases: ξ-Co and/or ξ-Cr (fcc - face-centered cubic) and γ-Co (hcp - hexagonal close-packed). Mechanical properties of the Co-Cr alloy obtained by applying selective laser melting technology compared to the cast Co-Cr alloy are superior or approximately the same. Conclusion Selective laser melting of the Co-Cr alloy is a good example of new technologies based on digitization. Together with other digitized procedures, this technology is an introduction to a new era in dentistry popularly called Dentistry 4.0. The advantages of the selective laser melting technology with respect to the conventional technology of casting Co-Cr alloy metal structures are precise metal structure fitting and eco-friendly technology.

AB - Nickel-titanium (NiTi) orthodontic archwires are crucial in the initial stages of orthodontic therapy when the movement of teeth and deflection of the archwire are the largest. Their great mechanical properties come with their main disadvantage-the leakage of nickel. Various in vitro studies measured nickel leakage from archwires that were only immersed in the medium with little or minimal simulation of all stress and deflection forces that affect them. This study aims to overcome that by simulating deflection forces that those archwires are exposed to inside the mouth of a patient. NiTi orthodontic archwires were immersed in CACO2-2 cell culture medium and then immediately loaded while using a simulator of multiaxial stress for 24 h. After the experiment, the surface of the NiTi orthodontic archwires were analysed while using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The observations showed significant microstructural and compositional changes within the first 51 nm thickness of the archwire surface. Furthermore, the released nickel and titanium concentrations in the CACO2-2 cell culture medium were measured while using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). It was found out that the level of released nickel ions was 1.310 mu g/L, which can be assigned as statistically significant results. These data represent the first mention of the already detectable release of Ni ions after 24 h during the simulation of mechanical loading in the CACO2-2 cell culture medium, which is important for clinical orthodontic praxis.

These data represent the first mention of the already detectable release of Ni ions after 24 h during the simulation of mechanical loading in the CACO2-2 cell culture medium, which is important for clinical orthodontic praxis.",

AB - Wear resistance is one of the most important physical properties of the artificial teeth used in acrylic dentures. The goal of this research was to synthesize a new composite material made of matrix Poly-(methyl methacrylate)-PMMA with different percentages (2 % and 3 % of volume fractions) of zinc-oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as reinforcing elements, to improve its mechanical properties. The dynamic mechanical behaviour of this composite was studied through the DMA method in comparison to the pure PMMA supported by the characterization of their microstructures. Then the wear resistance was analysed on the samples, which were prepared in the form of teeth. In this context their vertical height loss was measured after 100,000 chewing cycles on a chewing simulator, before and after the artificial thermal ageing. Investigations showed that the PMMA/ZnO NP composites dampened the vibrations better than the pure PMMA, which could be assigned to the homogenous distribution of ZnO NPs in the PMMA matrix. It was found that the mean vertical height loss for the pure PMMA teeth was significantly higher (more than 4 times) compared to composite teeth made with ZnO NPs. Introducing the thermal artificial ageing led to the finding that there was no effect on the height loss by the composite material with 3 % of volume fractions of ZnO NPs. Based on this it was concluded that PMMA/ZnO NPs composites showed improved in-vitro wear resistance compared to acrylic-resin denture teeth, so this new composite material should be preferred when occlusal stability is considered to be of high priority.

AB - The aim of this paper was to analyse the characteristic properties of different commercially available NiTi archwires (diameter 0.014 ''). Characteristic properties were determined by using DSC analysis for identification of phase temperatures and a tensile test for obtaining the mechanical properties, while semi-quantitative EDS analysis was used for their chemical composition. Analysis of phase temperatures showed that nickel- titanium orthodontic archwires, in the austenitic phase, were exhibiting superelastic effect in the oral environment (T=37 degrees C). The uniaxial stress-strain curves showed different values for the beginning and the end of loading due to the stress and transformation range. The investigation of the chemical composition showed an equiatomic NiTi alloy. The aim of the first phase of biocompatibility assessment of Ni-Ti archwires was to investigate the potential cytotoxicity on a model of rat thymocytes, where a direct contact exists between the archwire and the cells. The test was chosen because of the high sensitivity of thymocytes to proapoptotic stimuli and because the test includes the culture of non-adherent, non-proliferating cells, such as thymocytes, which is much more convenient for the evaluation of a material's cytotoxicity in direct contact, compared to the adherent cells such as fibroblasts. The experiment was designed to cultivate the Ni-Ti archwire samples with rat thymocytes, using different surface-over-volume ratios of the archwires in complete medium. The cytotoxic effect was evaluated by measuring the apoptosis. The aim of the second phase of the study was to investigate further the cytotoxic effects of Ni-Ti archwires in the short-term (24h) and long-term (48h) cultures of rat's thymocytes, which are highly sensitive to pro-apoptotic stimuli, where a direct contact exists between archwires and the cells.

AB - Superelastic (SE) and thermo-activated (TA) nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires are used in everyday orthodontic practice, based on their acceptable biocompatibility and well-defined shape memory properties. However, the differences in their surface microstructure and cytotoxicity have not been clearly defined, and the standard cytotoxicity tests are too robust to detect small differences in the cytotoxicity of these alloys, all of which can lead to unexpected adverse reactions in some patients. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that the differences in manufacture and microstructure of commercially available SE and TA archwires may influence their biocompatibility. The archwires were studied as-received and after conditioning for 24 h or 35 days in a cell culture medium under static conditions. All of the tested archwires, including their conditioned medium (CM), were non-cytotoxic for L929 cells, but Rematitan SE (both as received and conditioned) induced the apoptosis of rat thymocytes in a direct contact. In contrast, TruFlex SE and Equire TA increased the proliferation of thymocytes. The cytotoxic effect of Rematitan SE correlated with the higher release of Ni ions in CM, higher concentration of surface Ni and an increased oxygen layer thickness after the conditioning. In conclusion, the apoptosis assay on rat thymocytes, in contrast to the less sensitive standard assay on L929 cells, revealed that Rematitan SE was less cytocompatible compared to other archwires and the effect was most probably associated with a higher exposition of the cells to Ni on the surface of the archwire, due to the formation of unstable oxide layer.

AB - Introduction Forces generated in orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances create tension and compression zones in the periodontal ligament resulting in a painful experience for patients. In the first phase of orthodontic treatment, when leveling of teeth is needed, nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires can be completely engaged in brackets, even in the cases of extreme crowding, exerting small forces. There is a great individual variation in the pain perception related to the application of orthodontic forces. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the pain perception among patients with dental crowding after insertion of six different NiTi orthodontic archwires as a part of fixed appliances in the first stage of orthodontic treatment. Methods The study was conducted on a sample of 189 orthodontic patients receiving one of six different either superelastic or heat activated NiTi archwires, in the first phase of orthodontic treatment. Pain perception was evaluated in groups of patients with different degree of crowding. The modified McGill Pain Questionnaire with Visual Analogue Scale was used to evaluate the quality and intensity of pain. Statistical analysis was performed using simple descriptive statistics, and Pearson's chi-square test with statistical significance of p lt 0.05. Results Majority of patients reported pain as discomfort or pressure of moderate intensity caused by chewing or biting, started within 12 hours, carried on for 3-4 days, and decreased over time without self-medication. Conclusion No correlation was found between pain perception among patients with different types of NiTi archwires and the degree of crowding.

AB - Thin hydroxyapatite coatings were produced on Cp-Titanium Grade-2 samples, with new high-voltage pulse-power equipment PJ-100 (Plasma Jet, Serbia) in order to get a more stable implant structure appropriate for further clinical applications. A comparative analysis of differently prepared surfaces of the Cp-Titanium Grade-2 samples was done before the hydroxyapatite was applied. Microstructural observation of the modified hydroxyapatite/implant surface was done using scanning-electron-microscopy imaging and Auger electron spectroscopy, with the aim of detecting the morphology and the elements contained in the new surfaces of the samples. The results confirmed that the surface of Cp-Titanium Grade-2 modified with hydroxyapatite is very similar to the bone structure.

AB - The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and thermoplastic polycarbonate (TPC) materials in order to produce night bruxoguards. For this purpose we used a static tensile test. In the next step the microstructures of PMMA and TPC were observed. Within this framework special attention was paid to the examination of the tensile-test tube fracture surfaces for both materials. This approach revealed that PMMA is a brittle and TPC is a plastic material. Certain mechanical properties and a review of the crucial areas confirmed that the TPC material is extremely favourable for making occlusal splints.

AB - In this research, the structure changes along the depth gradient layers of titanium substrate, after etching with NaOH and subsequent thermal treatment at various temperatures between 300 and 800 degrees C, were investigated by XRD, FTIR and AES. Particularly, the changes of Ti substrate after etching with NaOH, subsequent ionic exchange of Na+ with Ca2+ ions and thermal treatment at 700 degrees C were analysed. Due to this approach, it was possible to get insight into the chemical changes and changes of Ti oxidation states and consequent phase analysis, along the depth of the titanium oxide coatings. In addition, Secondary Electron Imaging (SEI) showed very interesting nanotopology of all samples. Particularly interesting topology, consisting of very thin nano-designed walls between mutually interconnected pores, was observed for the sample in which Na+ were replaced with Ca2+ ions. This structure might be suitable for deposition of hydroxyapatite by biomimetic or plasma methods and as an appropriate scaffold for cell adhesion and proliferation.

AB - The aim of this paper was to analyse the characteristic properties of six different, commercially available nickel-titanium orthodontic wires with a diameter of 0.305 mm (0.014"). The characteristic properties were determined by using semi-quantitative EDX analyses, DSC analyses for a determination of the phase temperatures, and a tensile test to obtain the mechanical properties of the wires. The investigation of the chemical composition showed an equiatomic NiTi alloy. Analyses of phase temperatures showed that the nickel-titanium orthodontic wires were, in an austenitic microstructure, exhibiting a superelastic effect in the oral environment. The uniaxial tensile stress strain curves showed different values for the beginning and the end of the transformation range during the loading.

AB - The aim of this study was to assess and compare the mechanical resistance and the retentive force of metal and composite post systems cemented with different types of cements. Three different designs of prefabricated titanium alloy posts were used in the study, i.e., active, passive and combined, as well as AgPd cast posts and two different fibre-reinforced composite post systems. In accordance with the experimental design these posts were cemented with zinc phosphate, self-curing composite resin or self-adhesive, self-etching, luting agent. Comparing the results between the different metal post designs, cemented with zinc phosphate, a statistically significant difference in the retention was found between all the analysed posts. The best results with the pull-out test were obtained with the active posts, then the passive, followed by the combined posts. The metal cast posts cemented conventionally with Zn-phosphate demonstrated the lowest retentive force value, based on all the measurements. The bond strengths between the post and the root dentine were influenced statistically by the post design (active, passive, combined or cast) and material, metal vs. composite. The active Ti posts showed significantly superior retention in combination with all the cements. The Ti alloy posts achieved higher retentive force values than the composite posts, in general. The composite cements compared to the Zn-phosphate ensure a better retentive strength for all the posts, including individually cast posts.

AB - The shape and chemical composition, as well as the macro- and microtopography, of an implant surface have been studied widely as the major factors that positively influence implant osseointegration. Titanium and titanium alloys have been used extensively over the past 20 years as biomedical materials in orthopedic and dental surgery because of their good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, no cell toxicity, and very poor inflammatory response in pen-implant tissue, which confirms their high biocompatibility. Their favorable biological performance is attributed to a thin native oxide film that forms spontaneously on the titanium surface. It is well established that surface roughness plays an important role in implant fixation. Accordingly, some authors have indicated the existence of an optimal range of surface roughness. The titanium surface can be either chemically or physically modified, or both, in order to improve biomaterial tissue integration. Different treatments are used to modify the titanium surface. Hydroxyapatite coatings, preceded or not by acid etching, are used to create a rough, potentially bioactive surface. Oxide blasting treatments, either with or without chemical etching, are used to develop rough surfaces. Thick oxide films obtained by anodic or thermal oxidation have been used to accelerate the osseointegration process. The ideal microtopography of the surface is still unknown, however, because it is very difficult to associate surface properties with clinical results. As more accurate knowledge is required, several Ti surfaces have been analyzed and the endosseous implant surface modified on the micro level has been thoroughly studied. Additionally, the production of gold (Au) nanoparticles to be added to the micron-scale modified surface has been performed. In this respect, an appropriate overview of our results is given.

AB - This study was addressed to use knowledge about the orthodontic system with numerical simulation of the finite elements method. For the first time we simulated the stresses on the orthodontic system and, in this manner, calculated the orthodontic force on the tooth. A 3D orthodontic model or orthodontic system was designed resembling moderate crowding in the dental arch with all supporting structures. CATIA V5 computer software was used to set up a model for the orthodontic system and ABAQUS was used for simulation of the stresses on the orthodontic system. Our attention was focused on the stresses on the tooth lateral incisor and its periodontal ligament. The results of the numerical simulation showed complex stresses on the tooth lateral incisor and its periodontal ligament. In this paper there is presented a calculation of the orthodontic force acting on the tooth lateral incisor due to the orthodontic wire. This orthodontic force was calculated from the stresses on the bracket. The calculated orthodontic force was in the area which is considered as the optimal orthodontic force for movement of the tooth.

abstract = "This study was addressed to use knowledge about the orthodontic system with numerical simulation of the finite elements method. AB - This paper deals with gold, which is described as a chemical element. Special attention is paid to its physical-chemical properties and, furthermore, where or in what form it can be found in nature. We discuss the role it has played through history and we inform how gold has been developed to the level it has reached today's value. Still more, when gold is broken into nanoparticles, this form could be highly useful for a wide range of processes, including general nanotechnology, electronics manufacturing and the synthesizing of different functional materials. It is important that we know that gold is also used in industry in many engineering applications (contacts in micro-electronics) and medicine (dental alloys, implants).

AB - Placing a composite restoration on abutments for the removable of partial dentures gives favorable aesthetic results with minimal intervention. The objective of this paper is to analyze the stress distribution of a tooth with occlusal rest-seat preparation in the composite and compare it to the biomechanical behavior of an intact tooth, assuming that the stress and strain distribution throughout the intact tooth provides the control scenario. For this finite-element study two different models were designed. The first model was the three-dimensional (3D) model of an intact tooth, and the other one was a 3D model of a tooth with a composite restoration and an appropriate occlusal rest-seat preparation. Load stimulations were performed when the rest was fully seated on its corresponding rest seat and abutment tooth in order to obtain data about the biomechanical behavior of the abutment tooth compared to the intact tooth's stress-distribution pattern. The results of our analyses are presented and analyzed qualitatively. The occlusal loading effect along the sound tooth exhibits a wider high-stress area, localized in correspondence with the occlusal enamel, than the restored teeth. This is due to the rigidity of the enamel. The reduction in the stress values occurs in the composite restoration, which is less rigid. Its lower rigidity allows larger cusp movements. The stress-distribution pattern of the restored tooth with the rest seat showed that introducing an occlusal restoration does not differ from the intact tooth globally, but locally. Our findings indicate that the composite rest-seat restoration absorbs the loading, so reducing the stresses inside the tooth's structure.

AB - This work presents the possibility of numerical modelling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the field of nano-foils. The governing equations were solved using a Finite Volume Methodology (FVM). The computational domain was discretized using a uniform Cartesian grid with the appropriate mesh size along the x and y directions employing the corresponding number of grid points. The field variables were discretized at the cell centres and the spatial, as well as the time, derivatives were approximated using the second-order accurate numerical scheme. The time-evolution of the temperature and concentration fields, as well as the atomic diffusion coefficient, will be presented for the appropriate Al-Au nano-foil geometry and boundary conditions.

AB - Microstructures of two high noble experimental Au-Pt alloys were compared before and after conditioning for biocompatibility, in order to identify phases and microelements responsible for the alloys' corrosive behaviour. Microstructural characterization was carried-out by optical and scanning electron microscopy, in addition to energy dispersive X-ray analysis. X-ray diffraction was applied to determine the phases' composition and their contribution in the alloys. Additionally, simultaneous thermal analysis was used to identify the temperatures of phase transformations. An overall assessment before conditioning showed that Au-Pt I is a two-phase alloy containing a dominant Au-rich alpha(1) phase and a minor Pt-rich alpha(2) phase, while the Au-Pt II alloy contains in addition three minor phases: AuZn3, Pt3Zn and Au1.4Zn0.52. The highest content of Zn (up to 6.76 wt.%) was detected in the Pt3Zn phase. After RPMI cell culture medium conditioning, the Pt3Zn and AuZn3 phases disappeared, suggesting that they are predominantly responsible for Zn loss and the lower corrosive stability of the Au-Pt II alloy.

AB - This paper describes the development of novel, reactive Al-Au nano-multilayered foils, their possible application in different fields and a discussion of the nano-foils' suitability for dental and jewellery applications. Moreover, this study includes the rapid joining of similar and dissimilar materials, by placing multilayer nano-foils and two layers of solder or braze. The foils precisely control the instantaneous release of heat energy for the joining and act as a controllable local heat source. The reactive foils' thickness is in the range 10 nm to less than 100 nm and they contain many nanoscale layers that alternate between materials with high mixing heats, such as Al and Au. The foil between the two solder/braze layers melts the solder/braze with the heat generated by the reaction and bonds the components. The use of reactive foils eliminates the need for a furnace and dramatically increases the soldering/brazing heating rate of the components being bonded. Thus, ceramics and metals can be fused over required areas without the thermal stresses that are encountered in furnace soldering or brazing. In addition, a completely new plasma technology is proposed for the manufacturing of nano-foils and the first results of the preliminary experimental testing are presented.

AB - Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been investigated as materials for medical devices, but their biomedical application is still limited. The aim of this work was to compare the microstructure, corrosion and cytotoxicity in vitro of a Cu-Al-Ni SMA. Rapidly solidified (RS) thin ribbons, manufactured via melt spinning, were used for the tests. The control alloy was a permanent mould casting of the same composition, but without shape memory effect. The results show that RS ribbons are significantly more resistant to corrosion compared with the control alloy, as judged by the lesser release of Cu and Ni into the conditioning medium. These results correlate with the finding that RS ribbons were not cytotoxic to L929 mouse fibroblasts and rat thymocytes. In addition, the RS ribbon conditioning medium inhibited cellular proliferation and IL-2 production by activated rat splenocytes to a much lesser extent. The inhibitory effects were almost completely abolished by conditioning the RS ribbons in culture medium for 4 weeks. Microstructural analysis showed that RS ribbons are martensitic, with boron particles as a minor phase. In contrast, the control Cu-Al-Ni alloy had a complex multiphase microstructure. Examination of the alloy surfaces after conditioning by energy dispersive X-ray and Auger electron spectroscopy showed the formation of Cu and Al oxide layers and confirmed that the metals in RS ribbons are less susceptible to oxidation and corrosion compared with the control alloy. In conclusion, these results suggest that rapid solidification significantly improves the corrosion stability and biocompatibility in vitro of Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons.

abstract = "Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been investigated as materials for medical devices, but their biomedical application is still limited. In conclusion, these results suggest that rapid solidification significantly improves the corrosion stability and biocompatibility in vitro of Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons.",

AB - Different types of dental restorations are used in the treatment Of a unilateral, free-end saddle. A unilateral, complex, Partial denture is one of (lie indications for this case of partial edentulousness. Consequently, the aim Of this Study was to stress test the unilateral complex partial denture model and its parts, under load, when changing the length of thee free-end saddle. The stress distribution in canines and the first premolar, as the retention teeth. was examined under the influence of physiological and excessive occlusal forces by moving the point of attack in a distal direction. CATIA software was used for the creation of the 3D. Fixed restoration unit model, in real size, with the appropriate Supporting structures (canine and first premolar with present crowns, alveola. periodontal space) that are connected by the SD snap-in-latch attachment to the mobile portion of a partial denture. The mobile portion consists of in acrylate-coated metal base with three teeth (second premolar, first and second molars). The stress analysis, using the finite-element method, was performed Under the application of physiological loads of 25 N, 50 N. 75 N and 100 N, and excessive loads of 300 N, 500 N and 700 N in the second premolar region, as well as in the first and second molar region. The results of the analysis showed that the largest amount Of load under the application of physiological occlusal forces is positioned on the abutment teeth. Excessive forces are borne by the attachment. The stress analysis, performed on the unilateral complex partial denture model. Suggested that the obtained stress values are lower than the limit values at which the plastic deformation in the model occurs.

AB - Although highly noble Au alloys have been considered as biocompatible dental materials, little is known about whether recasting affects their biocompatibility. The aim of this work was to study the effect of repeated casting procedures on the microstructure and biocompatibilty of a noble Au dental alloy. The prepared samples of one- four- and eight times melted/cast Dentor S were used to study primary cutaneous irritation and sensibilization on experimental animals. The extract of the alloy prepared by conditioning the Dentor S samples in a cell culture medium was used to study the cytotoxicity on L929 cells. The elemental composition and surface changes of the alloy were examined by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis and optical microscopy, respectively. Our results showed that repeated casting decreased the biocompatibility of Dentor S, manifested as decreased metabolic and proliferative activities of L929 cells and that the effect correlated with the number of melting/casting procedures. However, neither sample of Dentor S caused irritation and sensibilization on experimental animals. EDX showed that recasting slightly increased the content of Au and Cu and slightly decreased the content of Pt, Pd and Zn. These changes correlated with the observations by optical microscopy. In conclusion, our results show that repeated casting of noble Au alloy changes its microstructure and decreases the biocompatibilty, suggesting that this procedure should be avoided in dental practice.

AB - Development of a dental alloy with high Au content is based on the ternary system of Au-Pt-Zn with a nominal composition of 86,9Au-9,9Pt-1,5Zn, and about 1,5 wt.% micro-alloying elements (in, Ir, Rh). The results analyses of different heat-treated states showed that the optimal mechanical properties and hardness of an Au-Pt-Zn alloy can be reached with combinations of heat treatment for 20 minutes at 723 K and then slowly cooling, if the alloy was annealed at 1223 K for 30 minutes and the water quenched. Research results confirmed that the microstructure of the Au-Pt-Zn alloy consists of two phases: alpha(1)-phase rich in Au (main phase) and alpha(2)-phase rich in Pt (minor phase). During XRD analysis and use of the Rietveld method, it was found that the alpha(1)-phase content is about 98,5 wt.% while the content of alpha(2)-phase is 1,5 wt.%. STA analyses show that the Au-Pt-Zn alloy has a solidus temperature of about 1292 K and a liquidus temperature of about 1412 K.

AB - The basis for developing a new dental alloy with high Au content is appropriate chemical composition and manufacturing technology. The demands which have to be met when developing a new dental alloy are linked with fulfilling the necessary requirements for making the alloy suitable for use in metal-ceramic restorations. Due to the stress generated by masticatory forces, alloys for dental restorations must have corresponding mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation), hardness, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), and biocompatibility. Namely dental alloy placed in an oral cavity reacts with the environment and deteriorates. New dental alloy with high Au content is based on the ternary system of Au-Pt-Zn with a nominal composition of 86.9Au-9.9Pt-1.5Zn, and about 1,5 wt.% micro-alloying elements (In, Ir, Rh). The dental alloy was melted and cast in a vacuum-induction melting furnace in Zlatarna Celje. Research results confirmed that the microstructure of the Au-Pt-Zn alloy consists of two phases: a1-phase rich in Au (main phase) and a2-phase rich in Pt (minor phase). During XRD analysis and use of the Rietveld method, it was found that the a1-phase content is about 98,5 wt.% while the content of a2- phase is 1,5 wt.%. STA analyses show that the Au-Pt-Zn alloy has a solids temperature of about 1292 K and a liquids temperature of about 1412 K. The optical properties of Au-dental alloy were investigated by means of spectrophotometric colourimetry. Spectral reflectance data from the mirror-polished flat samples of initial Au dental alloy were collected under the CIE standard illuminant D65. Finally the test of cytotoxicity of new Au based dental alloys using standard in vitro assays for testing the biocompatibility with establishing new, more sensitive, in vitro tests on cell lines was done. According to the results of our research we can conclude that new dental alloy from Zlatarna Celje satisfied all requested standards regarding mechanical properties, hardness and CTE: Rp0.=550 [N/mm2], Rm =610 [N/mm2], A= 9%, 180 HV and CTE (25-600°C) about 14,45×10-6K-1. This new Au dental alloy has a yellow tinge in comparison to conventional Au-Pt-Zn alloys and did not show cytotoxicity when using standard short-term in-vitro assays on an L929 cell. .

abstract = "The basis for developing a new dental alloy with high Au content is appropriate chemical composition and manufacturing technology. This new Au dental alloy has a yellow tinge in comparison to conventional Au-Pt-Zn alloys and did not show cytotoxicity when using standard short-term in-vitro assays on an L929 cell. .",
