AB - The aim of this study was to compare the effect of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nano-rods (HAP rods) and HAP nano-sticks (HAP sticks) added to commercial adhesives on the macro-shear bond strength (SBS) to dentine and morphology of the adhesive-dentine interface. HAP was added to Single Bond Universal (SBU, 3M ESPE) and Te-Econom Bond (TeE; Ivoclar Vivadent), in the form of water suspensions to avoid agglomeration of nano-particles and to achieve HAP concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%. Following a 'total-etch' or a 'self-etch' protocol, the adhesives were applied to flat dentine surface of 162 intact human, third molars (N = 6/group). Composite (Z250, 3M ESPE) was built-up using a split stainless steel mould, 3 mm in diameter. SBS was tested using a universal testing machine at 1 mm/min until fracture. Data were statistically analysed using two-way and one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post-test (alpha = 0.05). HAP(rods) had no significant effect on SBS of the tested adhesives while HAP(sticks) improved bond strength to dentine only of adhesives applied following the 'total-etch' total-etch protocol. SBS values of SBU containing 1% HAP(sticks) (15.10 +/- 2.96 MPa) and TeE containing 0.5% HAP(sticks) applied following the total-etch protocol (12.96 +/- 4.48 MPa) were higher than those of their respective control groups (10.36 +/- 2.68 and 7.97 +/- 3.64 MPa). Samples with higher SBS showed more 'mixed' failures. HAP nano-fillers may improve bond strength of total-etch adhesives without an adverse effect on adhesive dispersion on dentine and its ability to infiltrate dentinal tubules.

AB - This paper discusses the preparation of tooth design for porcelain veneers. It follows the literature more than three past decades. From the very beginning, the porcelain veneers were placed to no/minimally prepared tooth substance, showing different problems in clinical use. Later, the technique of etching the porcelain and controlling the reduction of tooth structure presented the great steps forward in porcelain veneers accepting. The special accent concerning the preparative design was placed on variations of incisal edge preparation - the problem, which is still present in current practice. Additionally, the paper emphasizes the extremely demanding protocols in making the porcelain veneers, as well as their expanded clinical indications.

AB - This study investigated the effect of shape, size, and surface modification of hydroxyapatite (HAP) fillers on the degree of conversion (DC) and mechanical properties of a model BisGMA/TEGDMA composite initially and after 4 weeks of storage. Ten percent of conventional glass fillers were replaced by HAP spheres (Sph), silicon-doped spheres (Sph(Si)), whiskers (Wh), silicon-doped whiskers (Wh(Si)), and nanosized HAP particles (Nano). Spheres were specifically structured agglomerates consisting of a central void and radially orientated primary particles, whereas whiskers were compact monocrystals. DC, Vickers hardness (HV), flexural strength (Fs), flexural modulus (Ef), compressive strength (Cs), and compressive modulus (Ec) were tested. There were no significant differences in the DC between all tested groups. HV decreased by 5.4-17% with the addition of HAP, while Fs increased by 13.9-29% except in Nano group (decrease by 13%). After storage, Sph and Sph(Si) groups showed similar HV, Ef, Cs and Ec and higher Fs than the control. The fracture mode of HAP spheres was through the central void whereas whiskers showed longitudinal delamination, transverse, and mixed fractures. HAP spheres with or without silicon- doping have a potential to be part of the filler content of dental composites.

AB - In this study, spherical particles of hydroxyapatite (HA) and alpha-tricalcium phosphate (alpha-Ca-3(PO4)(2): alpha-TCP) doped with different amounts of silicon were used for the preparation of scaffolds. The scaffolds were obtained by a replica foam method using particles of narrow size distribution pre-annealed at 1150 degrees C with different alpha-TCP and HA contents in order to investigate the effect of composition on their morphological and mechanical properties. Morphology, size, and distribution of the particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and particle size analyzer. The obtained alpha-TCP-HA scaffolds had compressive strengths up to 5.7 MPa with a uniform and interconnected porous structure. X-ray diffraction analysis used to determine the crystal structure of the scaffolds confirmed that the alpha-TCP-HA content could be controlled by the amount of silicon ions.

AB - Background/Aim. One of the results of many years of Cerec® 3D CAD/CAM system technological development is implementation of one intraoral and two extraoral optical scanning methods which, depending on the current indications, are applied in making fixed restorations. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of precision of optical scanning methods by the use of the Cerec®3D CAD/CAM system in the process of making ceramic inlays. Methods. The study was conducted in three experimental groups of inlays prepared using the procedure of three methods of scanning Cerec ®3D system. Ceramic inlays made by conventional methodology were the control group. The accuracy of optical scanning methods of the Cerec®3D system computer aided designcomputer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) was indirectly examined by measuring a marginal gap size between inlays and demarcation preparation by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results. The results of the study showed a difference in the accuracy of the existing methods of scanning dental CAD/CAM systems. The highest level of accuracy was achieved by the extraoral optical superficial scanning technique. The value of marginal gap size inlays made with the technique of extraoral optical superficial scanning was 32.97 ± 13.17 μ. Techniques of intraoral optical superficial and extraoral point laser scanning showed a lower level of accuracy (40.29 ± 21.46 μ for inlays of intraoral optical superficial scanning and 99.67 ± 37.25 μ for inlays of extraoral point laser scanning). Conclusion. Optical scanning methods in dental CAM/CAM technologies are precise methods of digitizing the spatial models; application of extraoral optical scanning methods provides the hightest precision.

abstract = "Background/Aim. Conclusion. Optical scanning methods in dental CAM/CAM technologies are precise methods of digitizing the spatial models; application of extraoral optical scanning methods provides the hightest precision., Uvod/Cilj. AB - The aim of this work is the investigation of alpha-tricalcium-phosphate (alpha-TCP) formation from calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHAP), synthesized by hydrothermal method from CaCl2, EDTA, NaH2PO4 center dot 2H(2)O and urea as precursors at 160 degrees C. Further, the influence of Ca/P ratios in the starting solution on alpha-TCP formation and the settings of obtained cements in simulated body fluid (SBF) were investigated. According to the results of X-ray, FTIR and SEM analyses, it is shown that CDHAP is transformed to beta-TCP at 800 degrees C, and to alpha-TCP at 1200 degrees C. Almost complete transformation of CDHAP into alpha-TCP occur after heating at 1500 degrees C in the case when Ca/P ratio in starting solution was 1,42. Cement powder mixed with the cement liquid (2.5 wt.% solution of Na2HPO4) completely hydrolyzes after 7 days in SBF, forming only CDHAP phase.
