Relevance of consequences' assessment after treatment of the tongue and floor of the mouth cancer on orofacial region functions

Abstract

A review of researches concerning orofacial functional disturbances after treatment of the tongue and floor of the mouth cancer is presented. It is particularly indicated to the importance of treatment consequences on breath, food intake and speech. Based on subjective impressions and objective assessment of orofacial functions, various investigators indicated on the poorer quality of life of those patients. It is obvious that surgery and radiotherapy are the most important in treatment of malignant tumours of the tongue and floor of the mouth. However, evaluation of consequences is very helpful for further treatment. Quality of life problems are considered to be interdisciplinary, and more attention should be paid by maxillofacial surgeons and radiologists, as well as clinical psychologists, speech - language pathologists and nutritionists.
