Efficacy of chemo-mechanical method for caries removal: Histological and SEM analyses

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of chemo-mechanical method for caries removal based on histological analysis and SEM of dentine samples. Forty-five human carious teeth were treated with chemo-mechanical method or with burs. Light microscopy was used to examine specimens for the presence of residual caries and the presence of bacteria in dentine tubules. SEM was used to determine the surface characteristics of the dentine after the caries removal. All examined samples were caries free. Regarding the presence of bacteria, the two caries removal methods did not differ significantly (p>0.05). SEM confirmed the efficacy of both caries removal methods, but significantly different dentine topography was recorded. The new chemo-mechanical method is efficient in removal of carious dentine.
Cilj: Proceniti mogućnost uklanjanja karijesa pomoću NaOCl modifikovanog prirodnim aminokiselinama (hemijsko-mehanička metoda) na osnovu patohistološke analize i SEM. Uzorak: 45 humanih zuba sa karijesom tretirano je hemijsko-mehaničkom ili konvencionalnom metodom lečenja. Efikasnost terapije merena je patohistološkom analizom tretiranog dentina. Pomoću SEM analizirane su karakteristike površine kaviteta nakon uklanjanja karijesa. Posmatrani uzorci dentina bili su bez rezidualnog karijesa. U odnosu na prisustvo i dubinu penetracije bakterija, dve metode nisu se značajno razlikovale (p>0.05). SEM je potvrdila efikasnost obe metode u uklanjanju karijesa, sa značajnim razlikama u topografskim karakteristikama kaviteta. Nova metoda hemijsko-mehaničkog uklanjanja karijesnog dentina pokazala se efikasnom u terapiji.
